•Do you always have a kit for survival in the event that you are lost, injured, or have gotten separated from the other members of your group while hiking, boating, fishing, skiing, mountain climbing, canoeing, or participating in another type of outdoor activities?
•Do all the members of your household know where to go and who to contact as well how to get in touch with the correct people when a disaster happens and no one else is at home?
•Do you have kits containing supplies for disasters in your car, office, and home?
•Does someone in your household occasionally check the supplies and change out the food and water in order to always have fresh supplies at hand? Foods that are canned or packaged should be kept in a dry and cool place. Expiration dates should be periodically checked. Always update each individual’s personal supplies as their needs change.
•Do you know the level of risk for the possibility of disasters and emergency situations such as flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms, severe thunderstorms with lightening, hail, high winds, earthquakes, heat waves, landslides, tsunamis, wild fires, extreme cold, hazardous materials leaks, accidents at nuclear power plants, terrorism, threats from chemicals, explosions, threats from biological emergencies, and nuclear blasts in your area?
•Have you educated the members of your household with a route for evacuation in the case that it should be necessary to leave the home, school, or work?
•Does everyone have a designated point for everyone to meet in the event of a disaster so that everyone can be accounted for?
•Do you and each member of your household know how and where to disconnect the utilities running to the house such as natural gas, main water valve, and electricity?
•Is there an emergency plan for the household pets?
•Is there an area that is prepared to be used as a shelter in your home, at your work, at your child’s school, or at some point between and is it possible to seal the area to make it air proof in the case of a radiological or chemical contamination?
Contents of a Survival Kit
All survival kits should contain much of the same things for every household but will also need certain things that will be unique depending upon the individual needs of each member of a household. Various suggestions for the contents of a survival kit to have in place in your home are as follows:
•For each person in the home there should be at least a three day supply of food and water.
•A radio powered by batteries.
•A flashlight powered by batteries.
•A kit for first aid.
•Blankets.
•Waterproof container of matches or a fire starting kit.
•Hygiene items, such as soap and sanitizer.
•Sanitation items, such as toilet paper and hand wipes.
•Some type of rescue signal, such as a whistle on a roped necklace.
•Extra clothing for each individual of the household.
•Hand cranked can opener.
•Plenty of extra batteries.
•Copies of each member of the household’s identification.
•Extra cash and change.
•Extra items that each individual may require on a daily basis such as medications, eye glasses, batteries for hearing aids.
• If someone is a diabetic in the household, one should store supplies that they may need such as syringes, insulin, sugar or something sweet in case of low blood sugar.
