Applications of Polycarbonate â Ghost chairs and the S chairs by Sophia Beeman
Philippe Starck is a designer who shot into fame when he designed the interiors of the private homes of the then French president Franois Mitterrand in 1982. He has been a product designer all his life creating prototype designs for products as diverse as motorbikes, toothbrushes, chairs and houses. He got his formal education in Paris, France and runs his own design firm.
Philippe Starckâs obsession and experimentation with polycarbonate has lead to a number of fantastic designs. The Louis Ghost chair has come out of this experimentation by Philippe Starck with polycarbonate. A much older design has been taken and has been modified into a new design. The new designs are available in a multitude of colours including pale orange, blue, yellow and other pastel shades. Even customization options for these chairs are also available with your own designs provided you give orders for at least 50 chairs.
The Victoria Ghost chair is an extension of the Louis ghost chairs with a round medallion shaped back design that is an extension of the Louis Ghost design chair. The design is overly clean and made from transparent polycarbonate looks very elegant. The chairs come with a number of colour options like the Louis Ghost Chair. The prevalent colours being orange, blue, yellow and other pastel shades.
Why use did he use polycarbonate is because of this - Polycarbonate is a very tough material that is used in modern day interior designing and also industrial usage purposes. Polycarbonate is tougher than glass and is used as a replacement for bullet proof glass being much tougher and about 1/6th in the weight of standard glass. Even acrylic materials are way below in terms of toughness and weight compared to polycarbonate. Only disadvantage of using polycarbonate is that it is very expensive and certainly more expensive compared to both glass and acrylic. A lot of usage of polycarbonate is easily recognizable if I name them here. The most widely being the compact discs and the DVDs that we sue to store information on are made of polycarbonate. They are also used in the prescription glass and also in the sunglass manufacturing industry being light weight, transparent and also with a high refractive index they are ideal. Together with their toughness they are also handy for prescription glasses.
The Panton S chair is the brainchild of the gifted designer and architect Vernor Panton who died in 1998. Panton had the imagination of a child. One would look at his designs and say that he is a kid in a mans body. His creations reflected his inherent thoughts and the apparent refusal to grow up in an adult. His creations were bold, colourful and often carried his imagination to the fullest. Although he is no more his designs have left behind a huge legacy which newer generations are rediscovering and are getting enchanted by the brilliance of the man called Verner Panton. Panton created the first inflatable chair. He had also created a flying chair! His S chair models were an instant hit. They were made of molded laminated wood. Two variations were actually produced and they were quite hit. It took Panton 10 years to commercially start producing these chairs.
