More Great Information on Greek Isle:

New York Broadway's, Current Plays and Productions. by Philip Graham

After booking a couple of discount flight tickets to New York, we decided to investigate what Broadway shows are currently running, and to our delight we found a great choice plays and ongoing productions with something for everyone.

From Mary Poppins, showing at the New Amsterdam Theatre 214 West 42th Street,
which is based on the books by P. L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney movie, it features many of the original songs from the 1964 film. With Ashley Brown playing the title role and being joined by Gavin Lee (as Bert), Rebecca Luker (as Mrs. Banks) and Daniel Jenkins (as Mr. Banks). To Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams' award-winning play, which is on at the Broadhurst Theatre 235 West 44th Street. It follows the drama that unfolds when a family gathers for a birthday. This revival is the first African American production, which has been approved for Broadway by the Williams' estate. Starring Terrence Howard, Phylicia Rashad, James Earl Jones and Anika Noni Rose.

Following a broken couple as they struggle with the arrival of a beautiful young woman in their home, Come Back, Little Sheba, at the Biltmore Theatre 261 West 47th Street, is written by William Inge and stars S. Epatha Merkerson. While, November, David Mamet's political comedy playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre 243 West 47th Street, stars Nathan Lane as the president of the United States in the days before an important election.

The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit musical which won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical and is now the longest-running show in Broadway history plays at the Majestic Theatre 247 West 44th Street. The story follows a disfigured musical genius, and how he haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera and exerts strange control over a lovely young soprano. While Wicked, tells the story at the Gershwin Theatre, 222 West 51st Street, of how two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, long before Dorothy drops into the land of Oz. Based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.

August: Osage County, on Broadway after a celebrated run with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, plays at the Music Box Theatre 239 West 45th Street. This finds a Midwestern family drawn together by the disappearance of a family member, while Rent, Jonathan Larson's riveting rock musical, based on La Bohme but set in the gritty underbelly of New York City's East Village can be seen at the Nederlander Theatre 208 West 41st Street.

For a couple of Jazz Age entertainers, it's all about fame, fortune and murder, and Chicago answers the question of What would become of a legend? Showing at the Ambassador Theatre 219 West 49th Street, while Curtains, featuring Frasier star David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre 302 West 45th Street, play in a backstage murder mystery from the songwriters of Chicago and Cabaret, Kander and Ebb.

Monty Python's Spamalot is lovingly ripped off from the famous comedy team's popular motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail shows at the Shubert Theatre on West 44th Street. It shares with us the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail. Spring Awakening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on West 49th Street, is based on Franz Wedekind's 19th-century German drama, about teenagers grappling with their emerging sexuality. A new rock musical that was created by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater.

Legally Blonde, based on the novel and hit 2001 MGM film, tells the story of a sorority girl who gets dumped by her boyfriend. She follows him to Harvard Law School. Making his Broadway debut as a director is Tony-winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell (La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray). Showing at the Palace Theatre 1564 Broadway. Whilst Avenue Q, set on a street in New York City where people and puppets live as neighbours whilst dealing with some of life's most thorny issues. Playing at the John Golden Theatre on West 45th Street, this deals with romance, sex, money, career, rent and other matters, which are unmentionable.

Hairspray, at the Neil Simon Theatre on West 52nd Street, is based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic film, featuring an overweight girl from Baltimore trying to snag the cutest guy in town and also win a coveted spot on a hit TV dance show. Collecting a group of hit songs by the Swedish super group ABBA and shaping them around the story of a single mother coping with her young daughter's marriage on a picturesque Greek isle, Mamma Mia! shows at the Winter Garden Theatre 1634 Broadway.

Jersey Boys, playing at the August Wilson Theatre 245 West 52nd Street, is a musical based on the life story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito. Chronicling the lives of a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who then became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. Julie Taymor's acclaimed staging of the Disney animated film The Lion King has been hailed as a Broadway landmark. The story focuses on a young lion cub's personal journey through to his destiny as king. Shows at the Minskoff Theatre 200 West 45th Street.
