How to get to Bastille from Charles de Gaulle airport?
From the Charles de Gaulle airport, I need to get to my hotel which is near the Place de la Bastille (one block north from Rue Sant Antoine and Boulevard Richard Lenoir). 1. What's the easiest way? 2. What's the cheapest way?
There are cabs, which are very expensive, shared shuttle vans which are considerably less expensive and public transportation which will only cost you 8.40 euros.
Look for signs directing you to the RER station in the airport terminal. The RER is a commuter train service that interconnects with the Metro inside the city of Paris.
You need only say "Paris" when you buy your ticket at the ticket booth because all fares to all stops in the city are the same price.
You will be given a small rectangular ticket. Take it to the turnstile which is visible from the ticket booth and insert in the lighted slot. The ticket will reappear. Be sure to retrieve it as you will need it to exit the station.
Since the airport is at the end of the line you needn't be too concerned about which train to take. It will, just for your information, be marked as going to "Massy-Palaiseau."
Take the train to the Gare du Nord where you will transfer to the Metro.
The RER and Metro stations are connected and going from one to the other requires no additional charge. However, on exiting the RER portion of the station you will need to re-insert your ticket and retrieve it once again. (Carrying your ticket is proof you have paid to be on the Metro. While you won't usually be asked to produce it there are inspectors wandering about and its just barely possible that you will be asked for it).
Gare du Nord is a pretty big place but everything is clearly marked. You will be looking for the "Correspondence" to Metro line 5 "Direction : Place d'Italie". If you get lost just wander around until you see the appropriate sign. Just make sure not to wander outside the station. If you see a sign that says "Limite de la validité des billets" you are about to do just that. So be alert.
Take the Metro to the Bastille stop. When you exit the Metro you'll see the Place de la Bastille with a big Column in the center and the Opera (a modernistic glass building). The opera is in the southeast quadrant of the Place de la Bastille. The blvd. Richard Lenoir is in the northeast quadrant.
